 If you are a professional in the modern workforce then often you need to leave your office, or cube, to travel for a meeting or conference. While on the road, I always fire up my laptop to check e-mail, review the latest sales data and peruse my, now limited, stock portfolio. It seems laptop screens love to attract onlookers—I guess it is just basic curiosity that everyone walking by stops to see what I am doing. Maybe they think they are missing out on the latest trend. Anyhow, if I am checking CNN.com then I really don’t care but when I am doing work I don’t like people seeing my company’s latest sales and client information. Also, on a personal front I don’t like strangers peeping at my bank account details and my credit card information. It was time to invest in a laptop privacy screen to protect me and my data.

To solve this problem, I recently purchased a ViewGuard Anti-Glare Privacy Filter for my Dell Inspiron 15. The ViewGuard Privacy Filter is aimed at professionals, consultants, road warriors and anyone else who may be required to use their notebook in public places including airports, Panera Bread, and Starbucks. I guess I fall into one of the above categories but I think just about anyone does today since we are all connected one way or another. With a little help from the customer service at buyviewguard, I was able to determine my Dell Inspiron 15 actually had a 15.6” Widescreen laptop. This was extremely helpful since my local Staples sale guys had no clue and told me all 15” laptops are the same.

Review – 15.6″ Widescreen ViewGuard Anti-Glare Privacy Filter

Shipping: The item was shipped the same day I ordered the product from buyviewguard and arrived in 3 days by UPS Ground. The packaging was good and they included 6 free samples of ViewGuard Anti-Static, Alcohol-Free LCD Screen Cleaning Wipes and 6 free samples of ViewGuard Anti-Bacterial, Anti-Static Keyboard and Mouse Cleaning Wipes. Freebies are always appreciated.

Design: The ViewGuard Privacy Filter is similar to other privacy screens and it is cut for a specific display size–in this case, a 15.6” Widescreen display with a 16:9 aspect ratio. The 15.6” Widescreen version of the ViewGuard Privacy Filter fit perfectly and attaches directly to the display using a few different attachment options. The accessory pack included a microfiber cleaning cloth, two different clear plastic tab shapes and a double-sided adhesive square. As shown in the attachment instructions, I placed on tab on each side of the screen and one at the bottom. The privacy screen slid right in and I could still close and open my Dell Inspiron 15.

Performance: In terms of performance, I give the ViewGuard Privacy Filter five-stars. With the ViewGuard Privacy Filter on, people sitting next to me only see a black screen. The screen is 100% viewable when sitting in front of a computer with the ViewGuard Privacy Filter on but as you start looking from an angle the screen becomes darker and darker until it is completely blacked out. As part of my pre-review testing, I conducting a trial with the privacy screen on during my most recent trip to Starbucks. While viewing sports highlights on YouTube without the privacy filter on several Starbucks customers (mostly male) searching for a table stopped to check out the latest sports action. With the privacy screen on I didn’t attract any attention as onlookers only saw a black screen.

Conclusion: Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and the performance of the product. The 15.6″ Widescreen ViewGuard Anti-Glare Privacy Filter works very well and it is peace-of-mind for businesses and individuals when it comes to information security and possibly identity theft. Due to the number of sizes available, you might want to confirm the size needed with the manufacture prior to purchase.
